What does "to serve" actually mean? The dictionary defines it as "performing duties or services for another person or organization." In Scripture, 1 Peter 4:10-11 tells us "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen." Each one of us has gifts that we can use for the Body of Christ, and God will move us around His Kingdom to best utilize these gifts for Himself. We believe God is moving us to Manila, Philippines with our gifts and abilities, to serve the mission community of Faith Academy and the national staff.
In January 2014, we joined the Faith Academy staff for a short-term commitment. Jerry had been let go from his job of 24 years and God opened wide the doors for us to serve overseas. Jerry stepped into the role of the acting Director of the IT Department, and I (Annette) used my computer skills to validate and verify data in the new student database prior to its recent roll-out. Faith Academy has invited us to return. After spending time in prayer, we have excitedly accepted the invitation. Jerry also worked one day a week at a local school, Cuatro Christian, that provides 1st through 10th grade education to over 600 impoverished children. This school is an extension of the Kids International Ministries. He helps to keep the teacher's laptops running, the internet working for the teachers to submit lesson plans, and helps with security issues.
Since January 2015, we have been back at Faith Academy, continuing the work that God had brought us out to do the first time. Our duties at the school have changed, as God has opened new doors for each of us. I am now the primary Member Care Coordinator for Faith while still working in the Alumni Department, and Jerry is helping set up the Robotics and Pre-engineering programs for Middle and High Schools. He is also helping TeachBeyond as the Global IT Director and set up a local office to support foreign members as well as recruit teachers from the Philippines who can have transformative impacts in other countries. Along with his other responsibilities, Jerry continues to volunteer at Cuatro Christian School as time allows.
We covet your prayer support. The first five months we were in Manila, we realized that the "prayers of the saints" were most important to us. AsFaith Academy does not pay mission staff; we need people and organizations to partner in our ministry financially as well.
